General
Alternating Current Press offers five different critiquing services as part of our Editing Bootcamp. Your work will be read and critiqued by a reading panel and by our Acquisitions and Critiques Editor. All work is read anonymously and blind. Do not approach our Acquisitions and Critiques Editor at any time that your work is under review. Each critique purchase also comes with a copy of our latest book. We can only critique material in English. Turnaround is generally inside of two months, but expedited options are available if you need your work sooner. You can send your material to us at any step of your drafting process, and you are welcome to resubmit it at a later date in a later draft, as well; please note, however, that we will always treat your piece as a final draft ready to be seen by others, no matter what stage of the process it’s in.

About Our Critiques
Our critiques are brutally, sincerely honest. They’re not always sweet, and they’re not always kind. They’re rarely going to be in your favor, but they will make you a better writer. Listen: We pride ourselves on that, and we aim to keep it that way. We don’t hold your hand or coddle you. IF YOU CANNOT TAKE TOUGH CRITICISM, DO NOT ASK FOR CRITIQUES. Because we will not apologize for stating how we feel about something that is truly subjective. That does not mean someone else will feel the same, and it is not personal, but we come at this with over 30 years of combined experience. We will not answer emails pertaining to hurt feelings from tough criticism. Service fees are not refunded once critiquing has begun or if you don’t like what we say about your manuscript. We’re not lying when we say you will not receive a pat on the back.

The Difference between Feedback, Critiques, and Editing
FEEDBACK that is an optional add-on for press submissions comes in the form of very brief notes, usually a small paragraph, of why we did or didn’t accept your work. It will be subject to the taste of our reading panel, and it will only be feedback on the part of your submission that the readers read. CRITIQUES are where our reading panel can dive deeper into a piece or a portion of a longer work. Those selections will be read thoroughly from start to finish, and critiques will be brutally honest and generally one or two pages in length. EDITING is line-by-line, adding comments and suggestions, and fixing all grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting errors of a piece, no matter its length. We are currently not open for full editing outside of our accepted Alternating Current Press titles, and we do not currently have the staff to handle critiques on full manuscripts.
